Background and release – On April 6, 2016, the song was released as a digital download single. It is the first song from Big Baby DRAM, DRAM’s debut studio album, which was released in October 2016. On Black Friday, November 25, a limited edition picture disc 7″ vinyl version of the song was released as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday sale.
In an interview with Genius, DRAM described the creative process behind the song: “Rick Rubin connected me to Yachty.” Rick asked me in Shangri La whether he could bring Yachty through. We connected and exchanged songs. A month later, one of my primary cameramen was following Yachty during his SXSW run, and I overheard their exchange.
We swapped phone numbers, and I noticed he was in Los Angeles, so I dialed his number and he answered on the first f*cking ring. He arrived in the studio, where we had this looping. We were uncertain as to what would make it persist. Initially, the piano was accompanied by a drum loop, then when the flute was added, everyone began to vibe.
I told Yachty to go in since I didn’t have any bars when he began his verse. I didn’t even have my verse when he departed; I only had the bridge.” “Broccoli” debuted at number 87 on the July 2, 2016 edition of the Billboard Hot 100 list. It debuted at number 5 and peaked at number 65 on the Hot 100 the following week, becoming DRAM and Lil Yachty’s first top 5 entry.
The song has sold 1,104,000 copies in the United States as of January 2017. On April 6, 2017, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the song as quintuple platinum for five million combined sales and streaming-equivalent points in the United States.
