Soaking Method – The soaking method is the first technique. This simply entails soaking your seeds in water for 12 to 24 hours to stimulate germination. To do this procedure, fill a small container with warm tap water and then add seeds. The seeds will expand somewhat.
- After 12 to 48 (maximum) hours, you can plant your seeds in a tiny container.
- Do not keep seeds in water for more than 48 hours, since they can drown.
- Eep in a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight.
- After two to three weeks, a little monstera seedling will emerge from the soil.
- Soaking is a straightforward method for initiating the germination process.
Since the seeds often have not yet sprouted, it makes planting them a bit simpler. I soaked my seeds for twenty-four hours before planting them in a peat pot within a little greenhouse.

How to Grow Monstera Deliciosa(a.k.a. Swiss Cheese Plant) from Seed Monstera Deliciosa, also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is one of those popular houseplants that you can’t miss if you’re just beginning your houseplant collection. What else could a houseplant hobbyist want?! They have gorgeous, iconic leaves that can grow larger than your head and the lovely ability to take over half the room.
The surprising but very good news about these plants is that they can be grown from seed, and it’s not too difficult once you master the fundamentals! You may or may not have read my very first blog post on this site,, which explains the fundamentals of what most houseplants require to germinate. As with most other houseplants, Monsteras require light, humidity, and warmth to thrive; therefore, a mini greenhouse with a heat mat and grow lights is the optimal environment.
If you don’t have a heat mat, place the seeds in an area that consistently stays between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and if you don’t have grow lights, keep them in a location that receives indirect but bright light (an east, west or north-facing window out of direct sunlight can work).
- Once you have the basic setup in place, here are the steps for actually preparing and planting the seeds: 1) Seed care: Getting the seeds to germinate is the easy part; the difficult part is keeping them healthy and fresh.
- Monstera seeds must be hard and green/yellow/light brown to be viable.
- It’s difficult to keep them fresh because you can’t allow them to become too dry or too moist.
The best way to store them until you’re ready to plant them is to place them in sphagnum moss in the refrigerator. This will keep them at an ideal moisture level until you’re ready to plant them. I recommend planting the seeds within a week of receiving them to reduce the risk of their viability deteriorating.
If the seeds are a little bit dried out, that’s usually fine. However, if they have a raisin-like appearance, are extremely wrinkled, and are mostly tan/brown, it may be too late for them, but a little bit of wrinkles won’t significantly affect their viability. Pre-soaking is recommended, but not required, especially if the seeds are extremely fresh.
However, if you are pre-soaking them, pour hot or warm water into a jar, add the seeds, and let them soak for 24-48 hours prior to planting. This will help break down the outer coating to make germination easier, as well as rehydrate the seeds if they have dried out.
The first tiny Monstera leaf is about to unfold! 3) Setup: There are various alternative techniques for setting up Monstera Deliciosa seeds; you can refer to this post I wrote on houseplant seed setups for more information. Choose the paper towel approach if you wish to observe the seeds germinate; otherwise, a ziploc bag or a little greenhouse arrangement is optimal.
I will continue using the micro greenhouse technique. You should use a peat-based potting mix wet with warm distilled water or rainfall when planting in soil, whether you’re putting the seeds immediately or after they’ve germinated. Plant the seeds so that they are gently covered with dirt, and then cover the planter with a dome, such as a greenhouse dome, glass dome, or even a Ziploc bag.
If condensation forms inside the dome, the temperature and humidity of the environment are optimal.4) Maintenance: Place the planter in a bright and warm location, and check to see that there is no mold or fungus development on the soil and that the soil remains wet (never soggy). The seeds should germinate within a month, and within two weeks under optimal conditions.
If you don’t observe any growth during that timeframe, you should search the soil for seeds. In general, the higher the temperature, the quicker seeds will germinate.5) Seedling Care: As soon as the seedlings begin to emerge, you should begin acclimating them to fresh air by removing the dome for a few hours at a period and gradually increasing their time in the open air until they’re fully adjusted to being exposed. 
How to Germinate and Grow Monstera from Seed – The good news is that Monstera deliciosa is rather simple to germinate and grow from seed! If you have expertise growing plants from seed, you will have no difficulty with this. This is a nice plant to begin with if you’ve never grown seedlings before.
Can variegated Monstera be grown from seed?
Will the monstera seeds I purchase on Etsy germinate? – Your seeds should sprout rather rapidly if you take the time to understand how to germinate them, keep them warm, and keep them wet. However, they will not develop into variegated Monstera. I’ve heard of individuals cultivating anything from grass to vegetables to basil.
HOW DO I KNOW MY PLANT IS VARIEGATED? – It is a frequent misperception that every alteration or discoloration in leaves must be a form of variegation. On a number of occasions, we have observed individuals on social media bragging about their good fortune since their beloved plant has recently developed some form of variation.
Usually, hunger or Mosaic Virus, a disease that rapidly spreads to neighboring plants and typically kills its host, are to blame. Then again, “How can I determine if my plant is truly variegated?” The best indicator of a high possibility of possessing a variegated plant is the purchase of a variegated plant.
Variegated Monstera Deliciosas are frequently available online. There are several dealers on eBay, Facebook, Etsy, and Instagram that are eager to sell their variegated specimens or cuts for a steep price. As previously stated, variegation is extremely uncommon, hence the odds of a plant randomly developing variegation are around 1 in 100,000.
To obtain a variegated Monstera Deliciosa plant, it would be necessary to take 100,000 cuttings and propagate new plants. Remember that this is only the average. Therefore, if you observe what you believe to be variegation on your non-variegated plants, it is likely something else. However, it may and does occur.
It’s simply not likely. Intriguingly, several plants exhibit stable variegation. Monstera Thai Constellation, for instance, was developed in Thailand for its variegation and is 100 percent stable, meaning it will not lose its variegation. Plants, such as Monstera Deliciosa Borsigiana Variegata, can lose their variegation and exhibit varying degrees of variety as they develop.
My Monstera, will it bear fruit?
Monstera Deliciosa Fruit – Due to the amount of time it takes for the plant to transform an inflorescence into a ripe fruit, a Monstera may bloom and bear fruit at the same time. This indicates that maturing fruit, immature fruit, and unopened inflorescences will simultaneously develop on the same plant.
- Monstera fruit need 12 to 14 months to mature.
- Monstera fruit is referred to as a spadix and consists of multiple berries initially covered with a waxy bract (spathe) that falls off as the fruit grows.
- The cone-shaped, green fruit is 8-14 inches (20-36 cm) in length and 2-3.5 inches (5-9 cm) in width.
The outer peel consists of hexagonal scales that cover the areas of creamy-white, luscious pulp. Rarely seen among the fruit segments are seeds and little black remains of blooms. As with the rest of the plant, Monstera deliciosa’s fruit contains oxalic acid.
