Plant Magnolia Seeds – When spring temperatures reach around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, plant your magnolia seeds 1/2 inch deep in a light planting medium in the ground or in containers. Maintain uniform moisture until the seeds germinate, which often takes a few weeks or more.
How quickly do magnolias develop from their seeds?
Planting magnolia seeds requires a methodical procedure. Magnolia grandiflora is an aristocratic broadleaf evergreen tree that represents the southern states in a manner. From North Carolina through Florida and Texas, it is native. It is nearly overused as a landscaping tree in parts of the southern United States.
However, its appeal can be well explained. It is virtually pest-free, has glossy dark green foliage, and produces enormous, fragrant, creamy-white flowers, which are followed by rose-red aggregate fruit that breaks apart in the fall to expose brilliant crimson seeds. This seed likely inspires a number of gardeners to experiment with propagation.
The advantages of growing magnolias from seed include: It is less expensive than cultivating them vegetatively. – It typically results in rapid establishment and healthy development. It develops a robust root structure. A downside is that they often take longer to blossom than plants grown vegetatively.
Due to open pollination, they may not be true-to-type, or will have different features than the parent plant. The seeds of the magnolia are collected in the fall as soon as the fruit is mature and the red seeds are visible all around the fruit. Before a seed may be stratified, the outer seed coat, which consists of a crimson, meaty pulp, must be removed.
This can be accomplished by soaking the seed for one to two days in warm or hot water to which a detergent has been added in order to eliminate any residues of the oily layer that prevents them from drying out. While the seeds are still submerged in water, it is simple to distinguish between the full and empty seeds.
Good seeds (those devoid of red pulp) sink, whereas empty seeds and pulp float. After washing, the seeds should be planted directly in the fall or stratified for two to three months at around 40 degrees until spring planting. You may sow them directly into the soil in a well-prepared area of the garden, or you can spread them thinly in a seed tray or similar container filled with well-drained potting mix.
Water. Place the labeled and dated seed tray in a cold frame so that the seeds are exposed to low temperatures. Due to the uncontrollable nature of this method, the germination of certain seeds may be delayed for a season. Mixing the seed with moist sand or peat moss, placing it in a container, and keeping it in an area where the temperature is kept at 40 degrees is a more regulated procedure.
The splitting of the inner seed coat signifies the germination readiness of the seed. Allowing the seeds to dry out appears to be detrimental. The germination media must not get dry after seeding. Magnolia grandiflora seeds, and perhaps those of other species, lose viability if kept at room temperature during the winter.
If long-term storage is required, seeds should be kept in sealed containers between 32 and 40 degrees. After the seed has through the stratification phase, it may be seeded at temperatures of around 70 degrees. Germination will occur between 30 to 40 days.
