It is set in the future, long enough after the destruction of the Earth for new species to have evolved, and chronicles the struggles of five groups of young adults to survive after being resurrected from. The Japanese government placed five groups of individuals in cryogenic chambers with a supply of “seeds” as the inspiration for the title.
The manga debuted in the November 2001 issue of’s magazine; it was transferred to’s magazine in April 2002, where it ran until its conclusion in May 2017. Shogakukan compiled the chapters into 35 volumes. A Yukio Takahashi-produced and -directed adaptation of (ONA) was announced in November 2018.
