Is Illinois a number 1 seed?

  • This is the third consecutive season in which they would have been dancing.
  • Yes, I am aware that the 2020 NCAA tournament was canceled, therefore technically no teams qualified for the postseason.

However, Illinois finished the season rated among the top 25, therefore a rational person would include them. Thankfully, those times are passed, and we may now see the Illini. The previous year did not go as we had intended. A second-round loss to Loyola Chicago left many Illinois supporters with a sour taste in their mouths.

How then can Illinois still win the Big Ten championship? In the last week of the Big Ten regular season, four teams have a mathematical opportunity to win at least a share of the Big Ten championship. Sunday’s victory against Michigan has made the Orange and Blue one of them, much to the delight of Illini supporters. The current top four, including this week’s games, are as follows:

  1. Wisconsin 14 vs 4 (Tuesday vs. Purdue, Saturday vs. Nebraska)
  2. Purdue (13-5) is at Wisconsin on Tuesday and Indiana on Saturday.
  3. Illinois 13-5 (Thursday vs. Penn State, Sunday vs. Iowa) (Thursday vs. Penn State, Sunday vs. Iowa)
  4. Ohio State 11-6 (Tuesday vs. Nebraska, Thursday vs. Michigan State, Sunday vs. Michigan)

Illinois must win their remaining two games in order to win the Big Ten outright. In addition, Purdue must defeat Wisconsin on Tuesday and lose to Indiana, while Wisconsin must drop its next two contests. For Illinois to win a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship, they must win their remaining games and Purdue must defeat Wisconsin.

The Illini would need to win one of their remaining games, Purdue would need to defeat Wisconsin, and both teams would need to lose their regular season finale if they do not win out. With a victory over Purdue on Tuesday, Wisconsin can clinch the Big Ten title. Wisconsin may win the league outright if Purdue or Illinois lose their next two contests.

Reactions to Illinois basketball’s first exhibition game – is Illinois the Big Ten favorite?

Wisconsin will win at least a share of the Big Ten championship if Illinois or Purdue lose one of their last two games. Sunday’s victory over Nebraska would also secure at least a share for Wisconsin. Purdue will win the Big Ten if they win out, Wisconsin loses out, and Illinois loses one of their last two games.

  • Ohio State may finally capture a share of the Big Ten title if Wisconsin loses and Purdue/Illinois do not win.
  • Wisconsin is the only school that can win the Big Ten with the best possible record of 16-4.
  • Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois, and Ohio State are all capable of winning the Big Ten with the worst possible record of 14-6.

In the event of a tie in seeding for the Big Ten Tournament, the league employs a number of complex procedures. However, the decisive factor is the head-to-head record. If many teams are tied, the winner is determined by their combined winning percentage versus all other tied teams.

  • Illinois has the tiebreaker advantage against Wisconsin. (1-3 overall)
  • Purdue has the tie-breaking advantage against Illinois and Ohio State. (3-1 overall*)
  • Wisconsin has the tie-breaker advantage over Purdue and Ohio State. (2-1 overall*)
  • Ohio State has the tiebreaker advantage over Illinois. (1-2 overall)
  • Ohio State and Wisconsin split their season series. In the event of a split season, the head-to-head record against the next team serves as the tiebreaker. If the next team is determined to be Illinois, Ohio State has the tie-breaker. If the next team is determined to be Purdue, Wisconsin holds the tiebreaker.
