After losing to the Denver Nuggets on Monday, the Warriors were officially eclipsed by the Memphis Grizzlies, who now occupy the third seed in the Western Conference. The top seed is out of reach for all but the most hopeful supporters, as the Dubs are 8.5 games behind Phoenix, although they are just 0.5 games behind Memphis.
The fourth-seeded Utah Jazz are only 2.5 games behind the Golden State Warriors, while the fifth-seeded Dallas Mavericks are 3 games down and the sixth-seeded Denver Nuggets are 4 games back. With 17 games remaining, the Warriors may fall as far as the No.6 seed. Or, they may restore their No.2 seed status, which would provide them home-court advantage through the Western Conference Finals.

How often has a No.3 seed won the NBA Finals?

Even though they participated in the inaugural NBA play-in tournament last season, they did not advance to the final 16 teams, so that does not count. There was little doubt that the Warriors would return to the playoffs after a strong start to the season, but their playoff seeding was determined on the final day of the regular season.
Golden State clinched the No.3 seed with a 128-107 victory at New Orleans on April 10. This is somewhat uncharted territory, at least in recent years. During their run of five consecutive NBA Finals appearances from 2014-15 to 2018-19, in which they won the Larry O’Brien Trophy three times, the Warriors were the top Western Conference team in every season except 2017-18, when they were the No.2 seed.
Historically, only 15 third-seeded teams have reached the NBA Finals, and none have won the championship. However, recent history indicates that the No.3 can win the championship. Just ask the previous season’s champion. On July 20, 2021, in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Bucks celebrate with the Larry O’Brien Trophy after defeating the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Finals.

To reach the NBA Finals, No.2 Brooklyn defeated No.5 Atlanta in six games, including a seventh-game overtime thriller and a six-game victory.
