The University of Tennessee is represented by the Tennessee Volunteers football program (variously referred to as “Tennessee”, “Vols”, “UT”, or “Big Orange”) (UT). The Vols have played football for 130 seasons, beginning in 1891; their combined record of 862–408–53 ranks them eleventh on the list of all-time win–loss percentage records.672 and by-victories list for college football programs and second on the list of all-time win/loss records for SEC programs 405-273–33.593.
They are sixth all-time in bowl appearances (54) and eighth in bowl victories (29), including four Sugar Bowls, three Cotton Bowls, an Orange Bowl, a Peach Bowl, and a Fiesta Bowl. In their history, they have won 16 conference crowns and six national titles, including two (1951, 1998) from major wire services: AP Poll and Coaches’ Poll.
The Vols play at Neyland Stadium on the grounds of the university in Knoxville, where Tennessee has won 478 games, the most of any college football team in the US at its current home location. Additionally, with a capacity of 101,915 seats, Neyland is the seventh largest stadium in the US and the third largest in the Southeastern Conference.

After finishing second in the league’s regular-season standings, Tennessee will be the No.2 seed in next week’s SEC Tournament. The 13th-ranked Volunteers secured the No.2 seed with a 78-74 victory over No.14 Arkansas on Saturday, while No.5 Auburn secured the regular-season SEC championship and the No.1 seed by defeating South Carolina at Auburn Arena.
As the No.2 seed in the SEC Tournament bracket, the Volunteers will face either the No.7 or No.10 seed at Amalie Arena in Tampa on Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern Time on SEC Network. Friday’s quarterfinal round will begin with the No.1 seed playing at noon ET on ESPN, followed by the No.4 seed in the second afternoon game.
The No.3 seed plays the night session’s late game. In 2018, the Volunteers and Auburn tied for the SEC regular-season title with 13-5 league records each. It was Tennessee’s first SEC championship in a decade. After a spirited first half, Tennessee surged out to a 50-29 lead over Florida.

The Volunteers tied the single-season school record with 31 victories en route to a Sweet 16 appearance. Tennessee finished fourth in the SEC with a 10-7 record last season. The Volunteers were seventh in the SEC in 2020 with a 9-9 record when the COVID epidemic forced the cancellation of the SEC Tournament in Nashville shortly before their game against No.9 Alabama.

- Wisconsin was 9-3 versus Quad 1 competition and suffered two defeats against Quad 2 and two defeats to Quad 3.
Duke was 6-2 against Quad 1 opponents and 6-3 against Quad 2 opponents. They too suffered a quad 3 defeat. Tennessee ended the season with seven losses, though each defeat was against a Quad 1 opponent (UT was 11-7 against Quad 1 teams). They were undefeated against Quad 2 and Quad 3 opponents, going 9-0.
- The Volunteers played 18 games against Quad 1 competition.
- Tennessee had more Quad 1 defeats than Tennessee because Wisconsin played 12 games while Duke played just 8.
- This makes absolutely no sense.
- If Quad 1 victories are so important, then Tennessee should receive the better seed because they have more Quad 1 victories than Duke or Wisconsin.
And if defeats are so significant, the Volunteers should still get the better seed because they have no negative losses on their record. The only plausible answer is that the committee simply favours the Wisconsin and Duke brands. Fortunately for Tennessee, there is not much of a difference between being a No.2 seed and a No.3 seed.

Some additional tidbits: In 19 of the 36 years since the tournament field expanded to 64 teams, a No.14 seed has defeated a No.3 seed at least once. Only two fourteenth-seeded teams have ever gotten past the second round: Cleveland State in 1986 and Chattanooga in 1997.14th-ranked seeds are 12-9 in games decided by three points or less.
- Three of the most recent 14-over-3 upsets (Georgia State over Baylor in 2015, UAB over Iowa State in 2016, and Abilene Christian over Texas in 2021) were settled by a single point.
- The largest upset in a 14 vs.3 game, by 14 points, was equaled between SFA’s victory in 2016 and Ohio’s victory against Georgetown in 2010.
Only one 14-3 upset has required extra time. This was the 1995 match between Old Dominion and Villanova, which required three additional periods. A 14 seed defeated a 3 seed for seven consecutive years, from 1986 to 1992. This run came to an end in 1993.

The Wildcats defeated No.2 Memphis State in the Final Four to set up a game with No.1 Georgetown, the defending national champion and East champion.
