I am aware that this is a winter weed, but could you tell me what I can do to regain control? – Randy Answer: This spring, I’ve received numerous inquiries regarding lawn stickers.
Burweed or sticker weed (Soliva pterosperma) is to blame, as it is a cool-season annual weed that germinates in the fall as temperatures cool. It grows throughout the winter, blooms in the spring, and produces seed pods. As they mature, the seed pods produce sharp spines, which pose a problem. When barefoot, the spines on the pods can painfully puncture the feet.
Once the spiny seed pods have formed, nothing can be done to remedy the situation. Therefore, it is too late to eradicate this weed this year. Here is how to avoid a problem in the spring of 2020. A two-pronged strategy is optimal for controlling burweed and sticker weed.
- The initial measure is preventative and includes the application of a preemergence herbicide or weed preventative.
- In the autumn, a preemergence herbicide is applied prior to the seeds germinating, and it kills the seeds as they germinate.
- It is crucial to apply the fertilizer before the seeds sprout.
Apply the preemergence herbicide at the beginning of October per label instructions. Check your local nursery for products such as Sta-Green Crab-Ex, Green Light Crabgrass Preventer 2, Hi-Yield Turf and Ornamental Weed and Grass Stopper, and Scotts Halts.
