Birds toss seed husks from the feeder; often, birds do not consume the full seed. The kernel is the edible portion of the seed for birds. They discard the fibrous outer covering, or hull, of the seed. If you check the seeds beneath the feeder, you may see that the two inedible parts of the shell have been discarded.

Therefore, they carry one seed at a time, like as a sunflower seed, to a neighboring perch. They tuck the seed between their toes and the tree’s bark to secure it. Then, they use their beaks as hammers to crack open the seed. This behavior is really the origin of the nuthatch’s name. This style of “one seed at a time” and consumption elsewhere creates a highly unique bird feeder.

Do I even need a bird feeder? Can I simply scatter bird seed on the ground in my yard? You may really scatter bird seed on the ground.

Prevent raccoons from devouring an excessive amount of your bird seed. The easiest way to prevent raccoons from eating bird seed in your backyard is to put out only as much seed as the birds will consume by dusk. Since raccoons scavenge at night, they will miss the free meal you are offering.
Another equally simple approach is to bring your bird feeders inside at night and then return them to their perches the following morning. Your birds will not go hungry, and you will likely save money on seed. Additional options: Remove your bird feeders for a week or gradually lower the amount of food in your feeders.
When the banquet vanishes or its size diminishes, raccoons may seek out alternative dining locations. Hang ’em high – Suspend your bird feeders from poles with a diameter of one-half inch or less, and secure the pole so it cannot be pushed over. Raccoons are unable to climb such a tiny pole and will be unable to topple it in order to gain access to the seed.
- Suspend your bird feeders on a wire that stretches between two trees.
- If you also want to discourage squirrels from traveling the wire to reach the feeder, string soda bottles lengthwise along either side of the feeder; if a squirrel approaches, the bottles will spin and fall to the ground.
- Waste not, want not — Reduce the amount of seed that falls to the ground (an attractant for raccoons) by using only one type of seed per feeder and feeders designed to capture dropped seed.
If you are a do-it-yourselfer, you may construct a raccoon protection for your pole-mounted bird feeders. Or, if you are not so handy, you can purchase a raccoon guard from most retailers of bird feeding supplies. The traditional clothesline technique – Install a clothesline for hanging the bird feeder, away from any tree branches or other structures that may offer raccoon access.
